I serviced my car at weekend using silverline extractor and the aforementioned oil, PLEASE NOTE the oil, product code 282657, does show on the website as being 505.01 spec BUT the label on the bottle does not and only shows 502.00 & 505.00.

I am awaiting confirmation from Halfords as to the correct specification, and will post back if/when they reply.

Seatkid in another post has mentioned camshaft wear, are there any other problems associated with using incorrect spec oil?

i think if you do a search on the forum, seatkid has posted this numerous times and i think he will agree ITS USING IT LONG TERM that may cause damage,im thinking you have allready blown halfords up?

im also thinking they will just say it meets conformaty, but if they do see sense then get them to change the oil and filters as a good will exercise,MAYBE get them to stretch it for 2 oil changes f.o.c?

I'll at least be getting a foc oil change if they can't prove it's up to spec, I''ll just wait and see what they say first. Just a bit peeved that I didn't see the label till tonight when I was rooting through the 'tool' cupboard.

Could you let us know as soon as you do please? I've used Halfords oil in mine for the last couple of changes as I thought it was up to spec.

Many thanks, Tim

Just had this email:

Dear Brian

Thank you for your e-mail.

I have had this checked with our quality control team who have confirmed to me that the oil you have purchased will cover the VW 505.01 specification.

I hope you find this helpful, and thank you again for your e-mail.

Seems all is well and good.

Seems another sucker is born every minute......

If it covered it, why wasnt it on the bottle? Its a requirement of the approvals system to have the product marked as such.

YOU'VE BEEN FOBBED OFF.

Ask them for documentary proof that the exact product code on the bottle is linked to a valid approvals document which they should also let you see. The approvals document is issued from an independent accredited testing company such as TUV. If they cant do this, for whatever reason, demand a replacement oil that does have the approval on the bottle. If they were a decent company they would also compensate you either by refund or vouchers after all the damage might already have been done.

505.01 has additives specially to ensure the oil film does not break down due to the high shear forces found on the injector cams in PD engines. Once the lubricant film is compromised, metal to metal contact scores the specially hardened surfaces. When this happens, rapid wear subsequently occurs.

Their website specification makes no claim that it is 505.01 PD compatible.

Thanks Seatkid. I'll be digging deeper.

I input my reg on their website and zoom in on the label, I'm pretty sure that the description has since changed, The only thing I didn't check was the fine print on the label when I bought it (via reserve & buy).
